Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Palacio de Las Dueñas in Seville takes its name from the disappeared monastery of Santa María de Las Dueñas, located on the adjacent plot and demolished in 1868.
Composed of several buildings separated by patios and gardens, the palace combines – like the Casa de Pilatos – Mudejar, Gothic and Renaissance styles and is organized – like the Casa de Pilatos, around a central patio that serves the rooms dedicated to public life on the ground floor and the rooms reserved for private life on the first floor.
The Casa de Pilatos and the Palacio de Las Dueñas actually have more in common than their architectural style. The first buildings of the Palacio de Las Dueñas are built by Juan de Pineda, chief clerk of the municipal council of the city of Seville, and then enlarged by his son Pedro de Pineda, who sells them in 1496 to Catalina de Ribera – the owner of the Casa de Pilatos. The style of the Palacio de Las Dueñas owes much to the transformations and developments that she orders until her death in 1505.
The Palacio de Las Dueñas later becomes the property of the House of Alba following the marriage in 1612 of Catalina de Ribera’s descendant, Antonia Enríquez de Ribera Portocarrero, to Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Mendoza, sixth Duke of Alba. Since then, the palace has always belonged to the House of Alba.
In the 18th century, several plots are ceded, others are annexed.
The destruction of the Renaissance tiles of the patio and its conversion into a garden date from the beginning of the 20th century.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Palace of Las Dueñas becomes a popular place for European high society, the political world and the artistic world. The French Empress (but of Spanish origin) Eugénie de Montijo, Edward VIII, Jacqueline Kennedy, Wallis Simpson and Grace Kelly and her husband Rainier of Monaco visit the place.
In comparison with the Casas de Pilatos – so refined – the profusion of furniture and decorative art pieces and the luxuriance of the vegetation that invades the central patio give a completely different atmosphere to the place.
